What is traditional acupuncture?

Traditional Acupuncture is a time tested therapy that has been practised successfully in the Far East for thousands of years.

The philosophy behind the treatment is that subtle energy lines or meridians circulate around the body. These meridians contain our energy flow or “qi”. It is when this flow of qi is impaired that imbalance and illness occurs. With the insertion of fine needles at specific points on the meridian, the energy can be moved or redirected to where it is needed most. In this way the body's balance can be restored and the illness resolved.

The flow of energy can be disrupted in many ways: emotional upset, physical trauma, poor diet or overwork are all common examples. By examining these underlying causes and how they have affected the body, the most appropriate treatment for the patient can be selected. Treating the patient as an individual is at the core of the acupuncture treatment and it is this that helps allow the body to rebalance itself.

Western medicine has different opinions on how acupuncture works but in short, no one is really sure. However trial after trial consistently proves its effectiveness.

Acupuncture also includes other techniques such as cupping, moxibustion or acupressure.

Conditions commonly treated by acupuncture

In view of acupuncture's role in balancing the body and helping it to heal itself, it can be useful for a wide variety of conditions (such as those listed below), as well as helping people to feel better in themselves.

  • asthma, allergies, hayfever, sinusitis, bronchitis, coughs

  • backache, sciatica, frozen shoulder, knee problems, indeterminate aches and pains

  • migraines, headaches, dizziness

  • menstrual problems, PMT, infertility, repeated miscarriage, thrush, cystitis.

  • irritable bowel, constipation, diarrhoea

  • insomnia, depression, tiredness, anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome (ME)

  • arthritis, rheumatism

  • circulatory problems

Whatever the condition, whether it has a western medical name or not, a traditional acupuncture treatment works by taking a full and thorough case history of each person. Through this investigation and looking at the tongue and taking the pulse, an acupuncturist makes a diagnosis about imbalance in the the body. Every single sign and symptom is relevant in the drawing up of your individual oriental diagnosis and treatment plan. This holistic system of diagnosis can allow treatment to be given even when western medicine considers the situation a mystery.
