Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: What conditions can acupuncture treat? A: See section "What is Traditional Acupuncture?" Q: Does acupuncture hurt? A: Many people say they are scared of needles, but their experience of them has usually been restricted to the larger hypodermic needles used at the doctors. Acupuncture needles are considerably finer. People often report feeling a tingling sensation, a dull ache or a kind of pulling, so yes, you can often feel the needle when it first goes in, but after that people relax and hardly know the needles are there. Q: How many treatments will I need? As acupuncture is a holistic therapy, the number of treatments needed varies according to the individual. We can sometimes tell within the first few treatments how you will respond to treatment. Sometimes an acute condition can clear up very quickly whereas chronic conditions may take a lot longer. A general guide-line is said to be a month for every year you've had the condition. Menstrual complaints sometimes take 3 cycles before responding to treatment, but again this depends on the individual. Q: How long will each treatment last? A: Your first visit can take up to 1 1/2 hours to allow for a full consultation. Subsequent treatments will last up to one hour.
