Postpartum Acupuncture

Postpartum acupuncture can support new mothers with a number of aspects of recovery including hormonal balance, supporting milk production, raising energy levels and easing stress levels.

During my own postpartum period I developed blocked milk ducts on four separate occasions, the most recent being this week following a busy clinic where I skipped feeds. Instances where blocked milk ducts can occur include skipping milk feeds or if clothing is too tight (including baby carriers). The risk with blocked ducts is developing an infection known as mastitis. Blocked milk ducts are painful and uncomfortable causing the breast to become lumpy as the milk backs up, unable to be released.

Traditional methods of resolving include warm showers and hand massage, but these take time sometimes days to resolve the issue. I am very fortunate to have the tools to hand to assist with this using acupuncture. I used just four needles on my back on the shoulder blades known as the small intestine channel along with direct application of fire cupping to the affected area. After my treatment I made sure to latch my son for a feed (no better way to give one final push to unblocking the ducts than a hungry baby)!

On each occasion the duct would become unblocked post treatment and feed; the relief was enormous. I am always amazed at how effective acupuncture is even though I practice it! It really blows me away that I am able to treat myself naturally and effectively nipping what can become a huge problem in the bud at the outset.
